The power of connections

Writer: Matt O'ReganMatt O'Regan

In my work with Cheshire Ears, I've come to appreciate the importance of nurturing relationships with businesses that share our ethos. These alliances enhance our offerings and ultimately benefit those we serve. A notable example is my collaboration with Lee Thompson, an eminent senior audiologist at House of Hearing in Alderley Edge.

Understanding the need for reliable recommendations, I sought out Lee because of our shared commitment to delivering friendly, pressure-free service and focusing genuinely on clients' needs. Lee's professionalism and depth of experience make him an audiologist I wholeheartedly endorse.

Although my profession revolves around ear care, it had been nearly twenty years since my last hearing evaluation. With a family history of hearing challenges, I felt it was crucial to have a thorough check-up and scheduled an appointment with Lee at his Alderley Edge clinic. Ideally situated next to the village post office, House of Hearing offers complimentary parking, which is tremendously helpful in busy Alderley Edge. The clinic is also a brief five-minute walk from the train station, accommodating those who prefer to travel by train.

Upon my arrival, I was greeted warmly by the reception staff and immediately taken by the clinic's contemporary and inviting atmosphere. Lee welcomed me with a congenial smile and provided a brief tour of their state-of-the-art facilities before we proceeded to his office. Discussing my apprehension about potential hearing loss—a common concern in my family—Lee was comforting as he detailed the examination process.

The assessment began with an inspection of my ears using a video otoscope—a device I frequently employ myself—to check for any wax obstructions. Thankfully, my ears were clear, paving the way for the hearing test.

Lee meticulously explained the audiogram, a chart that illustrates hearing sensitivity across various frequencies and intensities. This crucial tool helps audiologists evaluate hearing capacity and formulate optimal treatment plans. The examination included Tone Testing, where I responded to various sounds via headphones in a soundproof booth, and Bone Conduction Testing, which assesses the inner ear's response to vibrations.

The testing session in the booth lasted about ten minutes, after which Lee promptly presented my results. Surprisingly, he informed me that my hearing was exceptionally good for my age, despite years spent in broadcasting where I often listened at high volumes—a decision I now regret.

Intrigued by the latest advancements in hearing aids, I experimented with a demo model. The technology has progressed remarkably—modern aids are discreet, comfortable, and vastly superior to the cumbersome, noisy aids I remember my grandma having. Lee pointed out that while NHS options are available, private clinics like House of Hearing provide immediate access to an extensive array of advanced devices.

Opting for private treatment offers a personalised service tailored precisely to one's auditory needs. Appointments are flexible, the care is consistent with the same audiologist, and it's possible for clients to leave with their hearing solution on the very same day. Additionally, dedicated aftercare ensures ongoing support and adjustments as needed, enhancing the overall hearing experience.

My visit to House of Hearing proved invaluable for numerous reasons: having my hearing assessed, understanding the advancements in hearing aid technology, and appreciating the aesthetic improvements in the devices. Moreover, it reassured me that recommending House of Hearing to my clients—after attending to their ear wax removal needs—would ensure they receive a warm, professional, and empathetic service. At House of Hearing, there is no obligation—just high-quality advice and effective solutions for progressing on their auditory journey.
